Hence, wise astrologers should in the first place ascertain the strength of the planets. The sources of strength shall indicate the directions from where the good results will come whereas the sources which are weak shall indicate areas of suffering. Beneficial aspects shall somehow try to protect such a house. It may be noted that the planets aspecting or occupying it cannot make it prosper or become beneficial if its lord is ill placed i.
Some add Venus to this list and others add the Moon as well. Houses aspected or conjoined by Saturn, Mars and Rahu shall suffer evil during their periods. Good or bad would depend on the nature of the houses and their relationship with Lagna Lord. In the Rasi chart, the fifth house from Lagna and karaka Jupiter is Cancer. The malefic lords of the eighth house Venus: Nija-roga and sixth house Sun: Agantuka drishti — Roga are placed in the fifth house thereby afflicting it.

For example, dasa Rasi housing Jupiter or Venus gives association of learned and holy people, religious learning etc. Dasa Rasi occupied by its own lord, Jupiter, Mercury, an exalted planet or strong benefics shall be favorable. For example, beneficial association in the fourth house gives conveyances, lands, treasures etc. Here, the houses can be reckoned both from the Lagna and the Dasa sign. The difference would be that, when reckoned from the Lagna, the result would reflect the effect of those combinations through out the life of native, whereas when reckoned from the Dasa sign, the result would show the effect only during the duration of the dasa. One might need to study the effect of planets in different houses and signs, to exactly judge the effect of a planet during Narayana Dasa. One point I need to highlight here is that, all planets when placed strong display the positive side of their being and when placed weakly and afflicted display their negative side.
Even malefics bestow their positive qualities to the natives when they are strongly placed in a horoscope. For that matter, when malefics Saturn, Mars are placed in exaltation and own house in a kendra, it cause the mahapurusha yoga. The effect of planets is also modified by a yoga or combination. Yoga is said to have happened when at least two planets have exchanged placed, are in conjunction, are in mutual aspect, have exchange their Navamsa or have exchanged their nakshatra.
Standard texts have given the results of each such combination, which might be extremely difficult to memorise. One of the guideline to analyze the effect of such combination is that planets exchange their nature during such associations; the benefics would behave like malefics and the malefics would behave like benefics. Whenever two planets conjoin, the most benefic would exchange its qualities with the most malefic one when seen in the order of beneficence.
Again when Jupiter, Moon, Mars and Rahu conjoin, like the first case Jupiter would exchange its qualities with Rahu and Moon would do the same with Mars. The functional nature of planets is also to be considered during the analysis of a dasa. On one hand the Kendra shows the direction in life of the native which hindus call Ayana the trikona shows growth and prosperity.
Thus the association of the lords of trines with Dasa Rasi is most conducive to self-development and the association of the lord of quadrant shows change of direction of life. There are four directions in the life of any creation, dharma the direction of self effort, righteousness, fulfillment of all duties and obligations , artha direction of material prosperity and achievements , Kama the direction of enjoyment , Moksha the direction of detachment and liberation. The focus of a person changes during different dasas based on the nature of the house whose dasa is running, which is moderated by various combinations placement, association, aspects.
The natural significations of planets bloom during the dasa of a sign placed with or aspected by the planets. Thus in the periods of dasa sign of Ketu graha karaka- significator of home or Venus kalatra karaka- significator of spouse , marriage can be predicted. Similarly the period of dasa sign with Mars in it can show procurement of landed property, Jupiter can show amassing huge wealth etc.
The significations of various planets can be studied from the standard classics. The deha and jeeva concept of Narayana dasa helps us in finding out the details of the condition of health and internal being during the Narayana Dasa period. It is possible that during a certain dasa, physically we might be perfect, however, worried and restless within and similarly the contrary is also too. Maharishis have differentiated between the states of body and Mind. The Deha represents the physical body of the person. The dasa sign itself is the Deha. Thus for determining aspects of health of the native, the position of the dasa sign from the Sun, the Chara Atmakaraka and Lagna should be examined.
The position of the deha rasi from the Sun would show, what situations are affecting the health of the person undergoing that dasa. This is because Sun represents the atma of the whole world and reckoning the dasa rasi from the Sun shows our relationship with respect to the world.
From the Lagna it would represent the physical state of the person and from the Chara Atmakaraka it would represent, how well the Body fulfils the internal drives set by the Chara Atmakaraka. It is noteworthy to see the placement of the functional benefics and malefics with respect to the Sun, Chara Atmakaraka and the Lagna to judge various perspectives of the health of the native.
While the deha shows the physical state of the native, the Jeeva shows the mental state. To find it, count as many signs from the Dasa rasi, as the dasa rasi has gained from Lagna. For this matter, the natural malefics Rahu, Saturn, Mars or the Sun are considered with Rahu being the most and Sun being the least evil. If they present in both Deha and Jeeva, death or similar suffering could occur during that dasa. If these planets are in Deha alone, the native suffers physically.
However, if they afflict the Jeeva, misfortunes occur and the life loses direction or meaning. Based on the intensity of the affliction, the native becomes frustrated with life and may even contemplate things like suicide. The nature of trouble can be seen from the nature of the planets afflicting the signs, either Deha or Jeeva. When these planets influence the jeeva the native might suffer due to deception if the influencing planet happens to be Rahu, theft and burglary if Saturn influences the Jeeva; Mars would show court cases and litigation; whereas Sun can show troubles form Government and influential people.
It should be borne in mind that if these planets are well placed such as in exalted, own house or friends house, the troubles would be much lesser, which would be more if the planets are weak and afflicted. When natural benefics such as Jupiter, Mercury, Moon, Venus or Ketu conjoins both the Deha and Jeeva, a period of happiness and prosperity should be predicted. During such period, there would be an end to sickness and sorrow. Deha alone occupied by natural benefics gives good health whereas Jeeva alone occupied by natural benefics gives happiness and prosperity.
Though not explicitly stated in the classics, the concept of Deha and Jeeva can be extended to the relatives as well to find out their statuses during a certain dasa. To do that, the Dasa needs to be counted from the house ruling a particular relative and counting as many houses from the dasa sign. For example, for a Sagittarius native, running Libra Dasa, to find the health and state of Mother, the dasa sign could be reckoned from the Fourth house, Pisces. Thus, though the jeeva remains the same the Taurus becomes the Jeeva sign.
Since, the dasa sign falls in the 8th from the fourth house, if afflicted can show serious health troubles to the mother. The effects of the dasa Rasi should be judged from its lord. The sign occupied by the lord of dasa. This shows how much effort is put during the course of a dasa and what kind of fruit is accrued thereof.
The paka shows the nature and extent of effort and hardwork we put during a certain dasa and hence is equated with the process of cooking, whereas the final end result is to be seen from the bhoga rasi, which literally means to enjoy the fruits. In this material world of illusion, hardly the fruits correspond to the effort put to achieve them.
Thus the concept of paka and bhoga is a very important tool to judge the hardship and the fruits. The strengths of lord of dasa Rasi, like exaltation etc, shall determine the beneficence of the dasa. Since the paka shows our own effort or karma, this is to be reckoned from the Lagna true self , whereas the fruits we get is based on the perception of our action by the world, the bhoga is to be reckoned from the Arudha Lagna perceived self.
If the lord of the dasa Rasi is exalted or debilitated, financial gains will be there Jaimini says tasmai ucche niche va srimantah- the exalted and debilitated planets bestow wealth. The association of various planets with paka and bhoga would show the nature of our actions and the results thereof, based on the natural as well as the functional signification. For example, if the lord of the Moon signs subhapati associates with or aspects Paka Rasi, financial gains will occur. The level of gains, their nature etc, should be seen from the concerned planets and Bhava.
Similarly, aspect or association of lord of second house from ascendant and Jupiter augments finances. The placement of the paka and bhoga also need to be seen from the Lagna as well as the Arudha Lagna. Thus a well associated Paka in the second from Lagna make the person invest money action , whereas the bhoga in the 2nd from the Lagna makes the person accumulate wealth fruit of action.
Thus due importance need to be given to the below three factors while judging the paka and bhoga. The placement of Paka from Lagna and the Bhoga from Arudha Lagna for the nature and extent of our action and results we get there from. They would influence the action and the results based on their natural significations. They would influence the actions and the results based on their functional significations. The analysis of the Narayana dasa needs to be done at two levels, reckoning the dasa sign from the Lagna and another one by reckoning the dasa sign as the Lagna and seeing various planetary positions there from.
Here the various indications to be interpreted reckoning the dasa sign from the lagna is given below. The difference in interpretation is that the influence of the natal lagna would cut across all dasas whereas the results signified by taking the dasa sign as lagna would only be present during that particular dasa. Following guidelines would be helpful in judging the results by reckoning the dasa sign from the lagna. There are certain houses where, when a planet is placed, it becomes extremely weak to carry out its functions. Such state is known as Marana death like Avastha state for the planet.
The marana avastha for the planets are Sun in 12th house, Moon in 8 th house, Mars in 7th house, Mercury in 7th house, Jupiter in 3rd house, Venus in 6th house, Saturn in 1st house and Rahu in 9th house from the Lagna or dasa rasi. The planets themselves are called the marana karaka or the significator of death and bring great havoc in the life of a person. The dasa of the sign which contains a marana karaka planet would bring havoc to the life of the native by showing death of relatives, signified by the either the natural, functional or movable significations of the planets.
They can also show troubles to the matters ruled by the houses lorded by the marana karaka planet. Thus, if Sun happens to be the 5 th lord, it can show troubles to father natural signification or troubles to the children functional signification for the 5th house. The scope of troubles can be varied and not everything can be covered in this article, however it can be said that the person would suffer due to the natural as well as the functional significations of the planet under consideration.
Some clues are given below to guide the judgment in the right direction for the marana karaka planets-. Sanjay Rath says Sun causes fire hazards; Moon indicates danger from water; Mars causes accident and danger from weapons; Mercury indicates trouble due to flatulence; stomach problems are indicated by Jupiter; accidents, trouble from opposite sex are caused by Venus and venomous bites by Rahu. Yogas happening in the dasa rasi will give the results of such yoga during the period of the dasa rasi. The dasa Rasi having a Raja yoga karaka Karta, Kevala, yogada etc planet shall be beneficial.
Similarly the association of any Kendra and kona lord confers raja yoga, unless it is broken by conditions such as weak luminaries or the dispositor of the sign where the yoga is happening or the planets involved in the yoga have poor strength sthana bala. These yogas can be studied from the standard texts. For example, if in a horoscope with Sagittarius ascendant, the dasa of Leo is running and the Sun and Mercury are conjoined in a sign, say Aries, such dasa would be extremely beneficial and harbinger of prosperity to the native.
Such dasa would also bring rise in career, fame, money etc to the native. Success and fame are sure to come if Lagna and tenth lord aspect or occupy the Dasa Rasi, since they are the giver of fame. Similarly if the 11th lord occupies or aspect the dasa rasi, it will bring friends, good income etc the significations of the 11 th house. Thus, the results of placement of a house lords in different houses would manifest during the dasa of the sign where the lord is placed and also the dasa of the sign owned by the house lord.
For instance, if the Lagna lord is placed in the 9th house, Leo for a Sagittarius ascendant native, then the result of such placement would be felt during the dasa of Leo as well as Sagittarius. During this dasa, the native would become very spiritual and religious; he would be interested in higher philosophies, will become charitable and would worship Vishnu as mentioned by most classics.
Also evil effects are experienced during the Dasa Rasi dispositing the 6th, 8th or 12 th lord or malefic planets. If these dusthana bad places lords also happen to be the malefics, then the results would be worst. During the dasa of a sign, the effect of planets in houses and signs from the Lagna is also felt. For instance, shastras say that when Venus is placed in the 7th house, the person becomes very passionate.
Many classics also give the results of a planet in different signs in the zodiac. Such results would also manifest during the period of the dasa. How the result would be judged for Gemini dasa. This would be the combination of Saturn in 7th house as well as Saturn in the sign Gemini. The classics say that if Saturn is placed in the 7th house, the results would be:. Depending on the overall chart, part or whole of the significations would manifest in the life of the native.
Dasa Rasi conjoined the lord of any house only promotes the same, provided such yoga for promotion also exist naturally. The birth of first child will occur during the antardasa of the sign occupied by the 5 th lord or aspected by the same. The birth of second child is seen from the 7th lord and so on. Badhaka sthana is composed of two words namely badhaka, which means obstructions or obstacles and sthana, which means place. Classics mention that the 11th for movable signs, 9th for fixed signs and 7th for dual signs are the Badhaka Obstruction places.
Rath says that malefics in Badhaka cause sorrow, misfortune imprisonment and diseases depending on their nature for examples Saturn can show troubles due to servants, Mars from litigation and accidents, whereas Sun can show troubles from influential people or the government. Rahu in the Badhaka sign can be very diabolical and would need appropriate propitiation. Similarly, the placement of the Badhakesha the lord of badhaka sthana harms the sign where it is placed based on the natural significations of the Badhakesha.
The trouble becomes stronger, when the Badhakesha is also afflicted by malefics or otherwise badly placed. During the dasa of the sign housing such Badhakesha could be troublesome and so does the dasa of the badhaka sthana itself. The best position for the Badhakesha is the 12 th house from the Lagna, where Badhakesha becomes least troublesome.
More details on Badhakesha and badhaka sthana can be studied from Vedic remedies in Astrology by Pt. Rath and the Prasna Margam. The results of placement of the dasa sign from the Lagna can be modified by the placement of the dasa sign from the Arudha Lagna. If the Dasa Rasi aspects the 11th house from Arudha Lagna, the person gets wealth whereas it causes expenses and troubles if it aspects the 12th house from Arudha Lagna. Reverse shall occur when these planets are debilitated in Navamsa i. Any planets or for that matter, even an Upagraha is beneficial in the 9th and shows prosperity and protection.
It should be used for protecting your image. Malefics in 6th show corruption while benefics show honest income. In the 3rd house, malefics shows courage and dominance, whereas benefics shows passivity and complacency. Thus by looking at the placement of the lord of the dasa sign from the Arudha Lagna, one can judge various things. For instance, if the dasa lord is placed in the 11th house from the Arudha Lagna, the native would gain during this period. If the lord of the dasa sign happens to be a malefic and placed in the 3rd from the Arudha Lagna, the native would take many initiatives during this time.
Similarly, the placement and aspect of the Arudha Lagna on signs reckoned from Arudha Lagna are also to be judged. Thus if the dasa sign contains a malefic and is placed in the 3rd from the Arudha Lagna, the native would be risk taking during this time. However, if benefics are placed in the dasa sign, then the native would be passive. One would face contradictions many times between the results shown by the dasa sign and the lord of the dasa sign. If such things happen, the native would face many contradictions during such dasa and sway between many extremes.
An intelligent astrologer would try to blend various significations and come to a consensus. There is yet another view which we endorse that the exact time of birth is the moment when the child is completely severed from umbilical cord of the mother and becomes an independent entity.
In spite of these principles in practice, we find that the correct or the exact time of birth is seldom available. Still people in India particularly those in urban areas who possessed clocks, time pieces or watches and who were interested in the preparation of the correct time of birth to some extent.
Nowadays in rural areas also this is done and in urban areas the births are generally arranged in hospitals. Our experience, However, shows that even in hospitals on many occasions the exact time of birth is not noted as the doctors and nruses are more interested in the safe delivery of the child than the recording of the time of birth.
Place of Birth—The place of birth is very important to determine the Lagna at a particular place correctly. We should also as far as possible know the latitude and longitude of the place. The "Table of Ascendants" by Lahiri has given the Latitudes and Logitudes of the important cities of India and of many foreign countries. If this information is not found in the book, we may have to take the assistance of a standard Atlas. Another point which is very important to note is that in India the Indian Standard Time was advanced by one hour from 1st.
September, to 15th October, for war purposes and was thus 6 hours and 30 minutes ahead of the Greenwich Mean Time G. Any recorded time of this period should therefore be reduced by 1 hour to obtain I. The Longitude of the Lagna as worked out in the previous lesson is the middle point of Lagna which is the first bhava in the birth chart.
In order to work out the cusps of the other house, we may first work out the cusp of the X House which you will find in many books being termed as M. Then the cusp of the Xth house will be calculated in accordance with the Table on page 8 of the "Table of Ascendants. By adding 6 rasis to 11th and 12th houses we get the cups of the 5th and 6th houses. Similarly by adding to the Ascendant or Lagna successively the difference between the 4th house and the Ascendant, the Longitudes of the 2nd and 3rd houses are obtained. Adding 6 rasis to the Longitudes of the 2nd and 3rd we arrive at the Longitudes of 8th and 9th houses which are opposite to them.
By the above method we are only able to obtain the Longitudes of all the twelve houses but that is not all. We have also to work out the stretch of each house. This we can do when we are able to find the Longitude of the ending point of a particular house and the commencement of the next house. This point of demarcation is called "Sandhi" in Hindi. Then by adding 6 rasis to the available longitudes we will bet the Longitudes of the remaining houses and Sandhies will be appreciated when we proceed further in our lessons.
We will now work out for the sake of illustration of the Longitudes and Sandhies in the case of a birth in Delhi at 9. Longitudes of various houses etc. From this tabular statement we clearly get the stretch of each house or Bhava. In the same manner we should understand the stretch of each Bhava. The utility of this information will be pointed out later. Only when this has been done, the birth chart could be said to be complete.
Lahiri a mention of which had been made at the commencement of these lessons. A glance through this book would show that it contains daily Longitudes of all the planets at 5. Now in our example nativity we have to calculate the longitudes for the time of birth viz. Before we describe the process for such calculations, the students may please note that for calculations in the longitude of the planets it is not necessary to convert the I.
The process for calculating the longitude for a particular date and particular time is as follows: 1. We take out the page on which the longitudes of the month in question is given. Here the month is March , so take out this page. Then we should work out the motion of each planet in 24 hours. This is done by finding out the difference in the longitude of the particular date and the next date.
In the present case the date is March 15, So we have to find out the difference between the longitude of each planet as on March 16, and March 15, We will note the difference between the actual time for which the longitude is to be found out and the time for which the longitude is given in the Ephemeris.
In our example the time for which longitudes are required is 9. So the difference in the two times is 3 hours 45 minutes. The difference between time 5. Please note that we have to take the Log. The manner in which these Logs should be used is also given on page Now we will for the sake of illustration work out the Longitudes of all the planets. Now the nearest Log. For 2. Thus the required Longitude will be This method has now to be adopted for calculating the Longitudes of the remaining planets.

The Longitude for 9. SHANI L In this case as the motion for 24 hours is only 3 minutes, there will hardly be any significant motion in 3 hrs 45 min.
For 3 hours 45 min. Being 3. As Rahu and Ketu are always in retrograde motion, we deduct 1' from the Longitude for 5. Thus the Longitude for the Lagna and the various planets for 9. Then we move anti-clock wise and in the second house we have Vrishabha rasi in which Sani has been placed according to his Longitude. The other planets have been similarly. In the form used in South India, as explained earlier the places of the rasis are always the same and all we have to do is to place the Lagna and other planets in the chart according to their Longitudes.
This is what we have done in chart No. At the risk and trouble of repeating, we may remind the students that in south India form the rasis are placed successively in clockwise order. So when Lagna is Mesha, the second house right to it has Vrishabha rasi and so on. The Bhava Chakra is that chart which bhavas the planets actually occupy according to the stretch of each Bhava. As the planets exert their influence not only on the strength of their rasi but also by their position in a particular Bhava, the erection of a Bhava chart is very important for the judgment of a horoscope.
In the Bhava Chart we give no place to rasis but only indicate the bhavas and position of planets in various bhavas. A planet is placed in a bhava, whatever be his rasi, in the stretch of which the Longitude of that planet falls. For the sake of illustration let us prepare the Bhava Chart for the example horoscope. The roman figures I, II etc. The remaining planets remain in the same position. Ravi has, therefore, been placed in the XI Bhava. Kuja has therefore, been placed in the X Bhava in the Bhava Chakra If the students will check and verify, they will find that the other planets have been placed in the other Bhavas by adopting the same principle.
Rahu and Ketu do not own any Rasi. We find that Kuja lord of Lagna or 1st house and 8th house is placed in the example Rasi Chart prepared by us in the 9th house but in the Bhava Chakra he is placed in the X house. Ravi Lord of the 5th house is placed in the 12th house in Rasi Chart but in the 11th house in the Bhava Chart.
Guru Lord of 9th and 12th houses is placed in the 10th both in the Rasi and Bhava Charts. Sani Lord of 10th and 11th houses is placed in the 2nd in both Rasi and Bhava Charts. Rahu and Ketu remain in the same houses in both Rasis and Bhava Charts. We have mentioned all this here only to bring home to the students that it is the position of a planet in the Bhava Chart that counts for the judgment of a horoscope.
When we prepare the cuspal chart, it will clearly show in which rasis fall the cups of the various houses. The Cuspal Chart of the example horoscope will be as below. It is a coincidence in this case all the cusps have fallen in the same rasi as in the Rasi Charts but quite often it so happens that more than one cusp falls in one rasi.
The result of this is that the lord of the rasi becomes Lord of both the cusps in that rasi. It will be better if this is illustrated by an example of another horoscope. This is the birth chart of a native who was born at Agra at 1. Just see the world of difference the position of cusps of the various houses has made in this horoscope. We have dealt with this matter at some length in view of the great importance of the Cuspal Chart in horoscopy.
It is from the Rasi Chart that we should see the position of planets in various rasis, their aspects, conjunctions, yogas this will be dealt with later. From the Bhava Chart we should see the position of planets in various bhavas: and from the Cuspal Charts we have to see which planet is Lord of a particular cusp bhava or house. If two cusps fall in a particular rasi, the owner of that rasi becomes lord of both the cups bhavas. This has already been adequately explained in the example given above.
We would advise the students not to get confused by trying to assess the value of these charts but just to try to follow them and understand them as per instructions given in this lesson and the previous lessons. It will not be difficult for them to understand their significance more clearly as they advance in their study of the subject. However, generally six or seven divisions known as Shadvargas or Saptavargas are in vogue. We do not propose to go into detail about these Vargas because for the beginners it will be sufficient if they have the Rasi along with Bhava Charts as explained earlier and the Navamsa charts.
Experience has shown that very accurate predictions are possible with these charts only. Navamsa means ninth part of a sign. On next page you will find a Table of Navamsa with the help of which you can prepare the Navamsa Chart in a few minutes. Now with the help of this chart let us prepare the Navamsa Chakra or Chart for the example horoscope. Previously we have got the longitudes of the Lagna and the various planets. We have to give their Navamsa in the Navamsa Chart. I salute VENUS who is as bright as snow, the fragrant cleander 'kunda' flower and the lotus stem, who is the guru of demons and who preaches all the sastras.
So the Navamsa Lagna falls in Vrischika Rasi. If we see column 13 we find this that it would fall in the Navamsa of Kataka. So we put Ravi in Kataka in the Navamsa Chart. If we see column 5, we find that this falls in Navamsa of Thula Rasi.
Vedic Astrology Terms and Definitions
So we put Chandra in Thula in this Navamsa Chart. Note : The numbers 1, 2, 3 etc. For example 1 means Mesha, 2 means Vrishabha, 3 means Mithuna and so on. There is another way of describing the position of planets in the Navamsa Chart. Panapharas cadent and 3, 6, 9, 12 as Apoklimas succeedent. As 5th and 9th are trines, they should not be treated as panaphar and Apoklimas respectively. Houses 3, 6, 10 and 11 are Upachayas, which means houses of growth. The Lagna 1st house is treated as Kendra as well as a Trikona. It is believed that all planets do good when they are in Upachayas houses.
There is another school of thought that natural benefics are not so good rather harmful in these houses while natural malefics give good results when posited there. We do not agree with the latter view and shall discuss this matter in greater detail at a later stage. Houses 3, 6, 8, 12 are bad houses Dusthana. Any planet posited in these houses destroys the signification of the house, which he owns. Lords of these houses do harm to the significations of the houses where they are posited. However lords of Dusthana if posited in Dusthans give good results. The principle behind this is that Lord of a Dusthana does good when he is rendered weak.
A planet becomes weak when he is placed in Dusthana. I salute MARS who is earth's son, who is as lustrous as lightning and who holds the weapon 'shakti' in his hand. FIRST HOUSE LAGNA Physical stature, colour, form and shape, constitution, health, vitality and vigor, natural dispositions and tendencies, personality and struggle for life, honours, dignity, prosperity, general well being, head, upper part of the face, virtues, longevity, start in life and an idea about the general structure of life.
This is also house of death or Marakasthana. THIRD HOUSE Mental inclination, ability, memory, intellect, inclination to study, courage, firmness, valour, prowess, heroism, younger brothers or sisters, cousins, neighbours, short travels, communications such as rail, wireless, posts and telegraphs, correspondence, writings, change of residence, signing contracts or agreements, rumors, carrying tales, hands, throat, shoulder blade, collar bone, arms and nervous system. FIFTH HOUSE Progeny children , inclinations, pleasure, artistic talents, recreation, entertainment, amusement, sports, romance, competitive activities like cards, crosswords, lottery, gambling or betting, love affairs, ambassadors, good or bad morals, mantra-tantra, religious mind ness, high learning and wisdom, enormous riches, spiritual practice.
SEVENTH HOUSE House of union or earthly ties, legal bondage, partner in life wife , partner in business, conjugal life, litigation, influence in foreign countries and reputation achieved there, danger to life, Marakasthana house of death. NINTH HOUSE Faith, wisdom and divine worship, fortune Bhagya , philosophy, religious and philosophical beliefs, meditation, intuition and forethought, place of worship, sacrifices and charity, father, preceptor Guru , teaching, dharma, dreams and visions, communication with spirits, long journeys, sea voyage, air travel, higher education, foreign travel, knees.
ELEVENTH HOUSE Friends, society, community, favorites, ambitions, wishes, desires and their fulfillment, gains of wealth, success in undertakings, incoming wealth, profits, prosperity, elder brother, reocery from illness, dawn of fortune, ankles. TWELFTH HOUSE Loss and impediments, restraint and limitation, waste and extravagance, expenses, drudgery and deception, investments donations, charities, separation from family, going to far away places, sorrow and sin, misery and misfortune, poverty, imprisonment, secret enemies, confinement in hospital, assassination, fraud, scandal, disgrace and secret sorrows.
Success trough occult affairs, the feet, the left eye, the left ear, comforts of bed, debts, life in a foreign place. The 8th and 3rd are also called houses of longevity and 2nd and 7th as houses of death or Maraksthanas. Each Avasthas produces its own result and this has to be taken into account at the time of the judgment of the horoscope.
The various Avasthas are as follows:. The result of this is gain from conveyances, respect from elders, fame, wealth and good progeny. In a horoscope if Sukra is in Vrishabha or Thula rasi, we will say that he is Swastha. Friend's sign or rasi means the rasi owned by a natural friend. For example, if in a horoscope Guru is in Simha rasi, which is owned by Ravi, as Ravi is a natural friend of Guru, it is said that Guru is in a friendly sign. If Guru were in Thula or Vrishabha which is owned by Sukra, we would say that Guru is in an enemy sign as Sukra is a natural enemy of Guru.
SANTHA When a planet is in a favourable sub-division by sub-division is meant that he is favourably posited in various vargas, mentioned in Lesson X he is said to be Santha. A planet in this Avastha is said to give favourable results. Such planets cause losses, troubles, quarrels with parents, imprisonment, etc. A planet is said to be combust when he is near Ravi. Here again, we would say that in actual practice com-bustion as described above has not been found to cause adverse results as described in the classical texts. The adverse result described are diseases, becoming orphan, losing wife and children and disgrace.
We have seen a number of horoscopes where planets said to be combust have given good results during their Mahadasha and Antardahsa. But then the principle as laid down by our ancients has to be remembered and judged in actual practice. We may also mention in this connection that it is also believed when Budha is in rapt conjunction with Ravi, that is, he is in the same degree as Ravi, he gives excellent results. The students would do well when they get advanced in their studies to test what we have said and from their judgments in this respect. A planet in this Avastha also gives adverse results.
Each planet is supposed to get a particular share of strength when he occupies a particular position. A planet gets Sthanbala when he is exalted, is in his own house, Mooltrikona and friendly house or when he is in his own sign in Shadvargas. For exatation and Mooltrikona signs see Lesson V. Guru and Budha have Digbala in the east that is, when they are posited in Lagna , Ravi and Kuja have Digbala in the south 10th house , Sani in the west 7th house , Sukra and Chandra in the north 4th house.
Kuja, Budha, Guru, Sukra and Sani get this source of strength when they are in retrograde motion or when they are in conjunction with Chandra i. Chandra, Kuja, Sani are powerful at night i. Ravi, Guru and Sukra are powerful during the day. Budha is powerful both. Malefics and benefics are powerful during the dark half and bright half of the lunar month respectively. Budha is powerful at sunrise, Ravi at noon, Sani in the evening, Kuja at first part of the night, Chandra at midnight and Sukra at the last part of the night. Guru is powerful always.
Planets are said to be powerful in their week days, months and years. About this source of strength we may point out to the students who are only beginners that they should keep the above principles in mind. We have already discussed the aspects of planets in Lesson V. The aspect of a malefic or an enemy planet lessons the Drugbala of the aspected planets while his Drugbala is increased if he receives the aspect of a benefic or a friendly planet.
Ravi is most powerful and Sani has the least natural strength or Naisargikbala. Our classical texts have laid down very detailed principles to work out the strength of the planets on the basis of the sources of strength described above. It is a very lengthy process and very few astrologers take the trouble of going in that much detail. For our students it will be sufficient to know the various sources of strength. Experience and practice will enable them without arithmetical calculations to judge the strengths of planets in a horoscope.
There is a saying that too much arithmetic spoils the predictive ability of an astrologer. Believe it or not, this is very true. We shall follow the Vimshottari Dasha system in our lessons. The total of different periods Mahadashas of the planets has been put as years which our ancients considered as the natural life period of a human being. The position of Chandra at birth is taken into account in the calculation of Mahadashas. Each Nakshatra has a planet assigned as its lord and Dasa at birth is determined by the Nakshatra occupied by Chandra at that moment.
The following method is adopted for calculating the balance of Mahadasha at birth. This indicates that 14 years and 22 days of Sani's Mahadasha is already over at birth and the balance that would remain at credit at birth will be 19 years minus 14 years 22 days, that is, 4 years 11 months and 8 days. All this detailed calculation will be avoided, if you obtain the balance of Dasha at birth from the tables given on pages 68 and 69 of the "Indian Ephemeris" for We find that we in our present case are concerned with the last column under which balance of Dasha is given, if Chandra is in Kataka, Vrischika or Meena.
In column five the balance of dasha is given for every 20' of longitude. For 12' we will have to find out from the table of "Proportional Parts for Dasha of Planets" one page Here for 10' the balance of Sani Dasha is 2 months 26 days and for 2' it is 17 days. So for 12' it would be 3 months and 13 days. This will be the balance of Sani Mahadasha at birth.
After finding the Mahadasha at birth we have to find out the sub-periods or Antardashas. In the Mahadasha of each planet we have the sup-periods of all the nine planets in proportion to the periods of their Mahadasha. The first sub-period belongs to the Mahadasha lord himself and the sub-periods of the remaining eights planets will be in the order given in the table of Mahadashas.

Here we find that the Mahadasha at birth is that of Sani. As this Dasha system is based on Nakshatras Budha lord of Nakshatras next to Pushyami in which the Moon is at birth in the example horoscope. After Budha it will be Kethu, then Venus and so on. The order in which the Mahadasha will follow has already been given in the Table of Mahadashas earlier in this lesson. We hope that the students will find this method easier.
It is for them to adopt which of the above two methods suits them. There is an easy method by means of which the Antardasha can be independently calculated. This may be helpful at times. When the Antardasha Tables are not readily available. Then cutting off the last digit of the product, multiply it by 3 and keep that figure as days. Suppose we want to find out the Antardasha of Budha in the Mahadasha of Sani. Multiply the Mahadasha period of Budha 17 years by that of Sani 19 years i.
By adopting the above methods the Antardasha of Buddha will be 32 months and 9 days i. The sub-periods are further sub-divided into minor periods Pratiantardasha. The further sub-divisions are Sookshma, Prana and Swara. In our lessons we would like to confine ourselves to sub-periods only because once the principle is known to find the results of Mahadasha and Antardasha, the results of further subdivision can also be assessed. That would be a matter for more advanced study of the subject. We have seen in respect of the example horoscope that the.
It may be necessary at times also to know the Antardasha operating at that time. With the expired portion of Mahadasha at birth there would be certain Antardashas, which would have expired. After determining them we can say under what Antardasha the birth has occurred. To do this, find out all the sub-periods Antardashas in Mahadasha. Add together these Antardashas from the beginning one by one till the total is a little over the expired portion of the Mahadasha at birth.
Reduce this total by the expired part of Mahadasha and the remainder gives the balance of unexpired Antardasha at birth. In our example horoscope, the expired portion Sani Mahadasha at birth is 14 years 22 days. The total period of Mahadasha is 19 years. Thus the Antardasha of Rahu at birth was 2 years 4 months and 26 days. When a very small portion of Mahadasha is left as balance at the time of the birth, students proficient in arithmetic or even other can work this out from the other end.
In common astrological parlance such a Nakshatra is called Janma Nakshatra. The effects of the various Janma Nakshatras given below are general in nature. They are, however, not completely wiped out. Healthy, enjoys life, learned, wealthy. Strong, joyful, learned, ungrateful, deceitful, multi-tongued. The yoga will be one which corresponds to that star in the above table. When the total is above 12 rasis deduct 12 from it. So the above longitude falls in Hasta Nakshatra. The yoga corresponding to this Nakshatra is Athiganda. But please note the Nakshatra worked out above is not Janma Nakshatra. Janma Nakshatra is only that in which Chandra is transiting at the time of birth.
This falls in Pushyami Nakshatra. So Janma Nakshatra is Pushyami, which Chandra was transiting in at the time of birth. Therefore, the effect of the sign in which Lagna or the Chandra Lagna falls will almost be the same, and are not being given separately. Persons born under this sign that is, natives of Mesha Lagna or whose Janma Rasi is Mesha are of middle stature. They possess a lean and muscular body. They are neither stout nor thick.
